May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Each May, communities across the country come together to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and highlight the many ways we can support mental well-being—for ourselves and for one another.
While the month began as a public education campaign in the United States in 1949, it has evolved into a nationwide movement focused on connection, access, and prevention.
This is what makes it especially relevant for municipalities like Franklin—where everyday programs, from arts and culture to recreation and community events, play a meaningful role in supporting mental health.
In the Town of Franklin, we’re proud to recognize the important role that everyday programs, services, and community connections play in supporting mental health.
A Moment to Make
The Department of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy invites you to step away from screens and reconnect with the simple act of making art.
Creative activities like sketching or doodling can help reduce stress, improve focus, and support overall well-being. This month, we encourage you to slow down, unplug, and take a “Moment to Make.”
Mini sketchbooks will be available at the Franklin Public Library, Franklin Senior Center, and the Municipal Building lobby (while supplies last).

Sketchbook Prompt #1: Feeling Calm
This week, draw things that helps you feel calm. It could be a place, a person, an object, or even an abstract pattern—there’s no right or wrong way to create.
Sketchbook Prompt #2: Emotions Without Words
Creative expression is a powerful way to process what you’re feeling. Draw your moods as colors or shapes throughout the week; see how they change before and after you sketch.
Sketchbook Prompt #3: Memory + Comfort
Revisiting comforting memories can help ground you in the present. Where do you go (in your mind) to feel at ease? Sketch places real or imagined.
Sketchbook Prompt #4: Play + Imperfection
Perfection isn’t the goal—showing up is. Fill a few pages with doodles—no plan, no rules.
Sketchbook Prompt #5: Reflection
Big or small—capture a few moments of gratitude. Draw things you’re grateful for, see how they change throughout the week.
