Sun.  Sept. 14--Second Sunday Speaker Series:  Author Lee Wilson Brings Catherine Beecher to Life!

Billed as ‘The incredible untold story of how a lighthearted romantic became a pioneer advocate for women’s education,” R. Lee Wilson’s recent book, Women’s Crusader, tells the story of Catharine Beecher and of her big impact on 19th century America. Sister of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Catharine at first seemed more destined for a life of domesticity than of public leadership. But her chance romance and ill-fated engagement with Franklin-born Alexander Metcalf Fisher, a brilliant Yale professor who would die in shipwreck changed the focus of Catharine’s life. After living for a time in Franklin with Fisher’s family, she emerged with a clear view of her life’s work, fighting misogyny and creating opportunities for women to get the education they needed and deserved. The program starts at 1:15. The museum is open from 1-4 and admission is free. 

Sat. Sept. 27. Franklin Historical Museum will Participate in Harvest Festival and host ‘Karaoke, Kazoos, and Cookies’

During the Franklin Downtown Partnership Harvest Festival from 12-5, the Franklin Historical Museum will provide complimentary popcorn on the front portico (for consumption outside of the museum, only, please!). Inside, we will be showing mid-century film clips from Franklin’s Chilson Collection, highlighting familiar landmarks as they looked 80 years ago! At 3:30 p.m. the Museum will convene “Karaoke, Kazoos and Cookies” in front of the museum, with kazoos provided while they last, free cookies and water. Musical direction by Franklin’s own Dennis Ferguson.

The Franklin Historical Museum is located at 80 West Central Street, Franklin. The museum is open Saturday mornings from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (except as noted above) and Sunday afternoons from 1-4 p.m.
