Since 2009, Honor Flight New England has honored senior veterans by flying them to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to their service. and this month, a few of our very own Franklin veterans will be taking to the air and witnessing their mark on history. 

“Their first flight took place on June 13, 2009, carrying 50 veterans—including 14 WWII prisoners of war and five decorated heroes—on a day that organizers described as ‘humbling,’” says the Honor Flight website. Since then, Honor Flight New England has served 2,329 veterans and has completed 65 flights, The trips are provided at no cost to the veterans, with all expenses covered through donations and volunteer support.

Among the Franklin veterans taking part in the Honor Flight are David A. Cox, who proudly served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force; Terrence S. Gilboy, who served four years with the Navy Seabees and is a Vietnam veteran; John B. Hefele, who joined the Navy Reserves in 1965, was called to active duty in 1966, and served a total of six years including two on active duty; and Joseph P. Lesica, who served in the Navy from 1968 to 1972, including two years on active duty and two in the Reserves. Each of these veterans brings their own unique story and experiences, and this trip offers them the opportunity to reflect on their service while connecting with fellow veterans who share similar histories.

Our Franklin veterans will board their flight September 14th, 2025, departing from Logan Airport. On this special day, members of the Franklin community are invited to come together at the airport in the early morning hours to give these heroes the warm and heartfelt send-off they deserve.

For the veterans, this trip is more than just visiting the memorials—it’s a way to recognize their service and connect with fellow veterans. Many describe the experience as meaningful and memorable, a reminder that their service is appreciated. By taking part in the Honor Flight, Franklin veterans join thousands across New England who have visited these memorials in honor of their dedication.
