One of Franklin’s most treasured historic landmarks, the Old South Meeting House, located on Washington Street, is undergoing renovations to turn it into a 3-bedroom home. When Connell Roofing saw an opportunity to contribute to safeguarding this piece of the community’s heritage by donating a brand-new roof to the building, they didn’t hesitate. A third-generation, family-owned company with nearly 70 years of experience, they understand that giving back means more than just doing business – it’s about helping neighbors and ensuring every family has a place they are proud to live in.

The church building was originally built in 1856, and many people have said in recent years that it should be demolished, since it has been unoccupied for quite some time. The town of Franklin, however, found a much better solution that would help preserve the building’s history while transforming it into a home through Old Colony Habitat for Humanity. 

“Being a part of the community means showing up for one another; I am proud to support Habitat for Humanity as an organization and blessed to have been able to offer this donation. Every person deserves a safe, solid roof over their head, and we are happy to be able to help our neighbors build a better future,” shared Ben Connell, Connell Roofing CEO. 

Town administrators leveraged the Community Preservation Act, which enables Massachusetts towns to create preservation funds related to community housing, historic preservation, open space, and outdoor recreation. These funds, along with community business donations, such as the new roof from Connell Roofing, made it possible to create a beautiful and affordable home for a worthy and deserving family. They broke ground back in June.

Partnering with Habitat for Humanity, Connell Roofing provided both materials and skilled labor toward the project, and the upgrade ensures that the new home will remain a safe and welcoming space while honoring the history of Franklin. The collaboration is a perfect example of the impact that local businesses can make when they join forces with nonprofit organizations for the betterment of the community.
